The Bank of Ghana (BoG) will introduce a new series of Ghana Cedi banknotes, known as the Heritage Series, as part of efforts to modernise the country’s currency, strengthen security features and improve durability.

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, announced the development during the 132nd Regular Meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) held at the Bank’s headquarters in Accra.

According to Dr. Asiama, the new banknotes are being introduced in response to changes in currency circulation, advances in technology and increasingly sophisticated security standards.

He said the Heritage Series would feature enhanced security measures, improved durability and modern designs that reflect Ghana’s heritage, culture, identity and aspirations.

“The Ghana Cedi is more than a medium of exchange. It is a symbol of our economic sovereignty and an important instrument of economic activity,” Dr. Asiama said.

He explained that the new notes would provide stronger protection against counterfeiting, withstand prolonged circulation and support more efficient and cost-effective currency management.

The new series will also provide an opportunity to honour Ghanaian national heroes while incorporating iconographic elements that tell the story of the country’s past and its aspirations for the future.

Dr. Asiama, however, stressed that the introduction of the Heritage Series does not mean the existing Ghana Cedi banknotes will cease to be legal tender.

He said the existing notes would continue to circulate alongside the new banknotes, urging the public not to rush to exchange or withdraw existing currency solely because of the introduction of the Heritage Series.

The Governor further appealed to Ghanaians, businesses, traders and financial institutions to handle banknotes properly to preserve their quality and reduce the cost of replacing damaged currency.
He specifically urged the public to desist from crumpling, writing on, stapling or using banknotes for decorative purposes, including money bouquets, spraying and other forms of currency abuse.

According to him, maintaining clean and durable banknotes is a shared national responsibility and would contribute to efficient currency management.
The Ghana Cedi Heritage Series will officially be launched on November 3, 2026, at the Bank Square in Accra.

Dr. Asiama urged Ghanaians to embrace the new currency series with pride, confidence and a sense of ownership while committing to preserving the integrity of the national currency.
