Nollywood has lost one of its most celebrated veterans, Olu Jacobs, who has died at the age of 84.

The veteran Nigerian actor and film executive, born Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, died on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, according to an announcement by his son, Olusoji Jacobs.

In a post shared on Instagram, Olusoji announced the death on behalf of the family, describing his father as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle.

The family expressed gratitude to God for Olu Jacobs’ life and legacy, referring to the renowned actor as “The Lion of Lufodo.”

“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle,” the statement said.

The family also appealed to bloggers, influencers and other social media users to respect their privacy as they mourn the veteran actor.

Olu Jacobs was widely regarded as one of the influential figures in Nigerian theatre, television and film, with a career spanning several decades.

His death is expected to trigger an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, filmmakers, actors and admirers across Nigeria and beyond.
