Ghana captain Jordan Ayew is expected to be included in the Black Stars squad for this month’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with the veteran forward reportedly closing in on a move to Sheffield United.

The 34-year-old has been without a club since leaving Leicester City following the club’s relegation to League One, creating uncertainty over his international future ahead of Ghana’s crucial AFCON qualifying campaign.

Ayew, however, appears set to resolve his club situation at a crucial moment.

The former Aston Villa and Swansea City attacker is expected to join Championship side Sheffield United as a free agent and could reportedly be unveiled on Friday, September 11, the day he turns 35.

A move to Sheffield United would come as a major boost to Ayew’s preparations for the new season and could strengthen his case for continued involvement with the Black Stars.

The forward spent the 2025/26 campaign with Leicester City, making 42 Championship appearances, scoring six goals and providing three assists. He started 24 league matches during the season.

Although his individual statistics were not spectacular, his experience remained valuable to Leicester, while his versatility and familiarity with English football have continued to make him an attractive option.

Ayew had been linked with several clubs during the period he remained a free agent, including Cyprus-based APOEL Nicosia and Championship side Blackburn Rovers. However, both clubs reportedly denied having expressed interest in signing the Ghanaian.

Sheffield United now appear to have emerged as his likely destination, potentially ending weeks of uncertainty surrounding the next stage of his club career.
