A Ghanaian TikToker identified as Michael Owusu has reportedly been arrested and charged after allegedly publishing a viral video claiming he discovered a razor blade inside a sachet water produced by Special Ice Mineral Water, a product linked to businessman Ernest Ofori Sarpong.

The controversial video, which circulated widely on social media, showed Michael Owusu displaying a sachet of water he claimed was defective. In the footage, he alleged that he had found a razor blade inside the sachet after purchasing the product from the market.

Owusu further accused the company of negligence and warned the public to be cautious when purchasing sachet water products, insisting that consumers could be at risk.

The claims quickly generated public concern online due to the popularity of the Special Ice brand, which is owned by the Special Group of Companies chaired by Ernest Ofori Sarpong.

However, according to reports, the TikToker has now been arrested, detained and formally charged over the publication.

Michael Owusu has reportedly been charged with publication of false news with intent to disturb public peace, contrary to Section 208(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), as well as Section 123 of the Electronic Transactions Act, 2008 (Act 772).

If convicted, the accused could face up to three years imprisonment under Ghanaian law.

The case has already been brought before Accra Circuit Court 10, where proceedings recently commenced.

During the hearing, lawyers representing the complainant reportedly cross-examined the first prosecution witness, Edem Kugbe, who serves as the Sales and Marketing Manager for Special Ice Mineral Water.

Presiding judge Evelyn Asamoah subsequently adjourned the case to June 22, 2026, at 9:00 a.m., when a second prosecution witness is expected to testify before the court.

The incident has sparked wider discussions on social media about misinformation, responsible online conduct and the legal consequences of publishing unverified claims against businesses and brands.

Special Ice Mineral Water remains one of the most recognised sachet water brands and forms part of the business empire of Dr Ernest Ofori Sarpong, who is widely known for his investments in manufacturing, real estate and other commercial ventures.

The businessman has over the years built a strong public profile in the business community and has frequently appeared in media discussions relating to entrepreneurship and investment.
