Benjamin Asare has revealed the painful and difficult journey that shaped his rise from a struggling young boy hustling on the streets to becoming Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper for the Black Stars.

The Hearts of Oak goalkeeper shared his inspiring story during an appearance on The Delay Show, where he detailed the numerous jobs he undertook while chasing his football dream.

According to the 33-year-old shot-stopper, poverty and hardship forced him to combine football with several forms of manual labour just to survive during his early years.

“During my primary school days, I sold polythene bags while studying. I also trained as a carpenter, a steel bender and a bus conductor,” Asare disclosed.

The goalkeeper explained that life growing up was extremely difficult and demanded constant sacrifice and determination.

“Despite my football career, I still made time to do all these things because I was a hustler and had to survive,” he added.

Remarkable Rise In Ghana Football

Benjamin Asare’s emergence as Ghana’s number one goalkeeper has become one of the most remarkable stories in Ghanaian football over the past year.

For years, the experienced goalkeeper largely operated outside the national spotlight despite consistently impressive performances in domestic football.

However, his outstanding form for Hearts of Oak this season eventually forced his way into national team consideration.

Asare made his senior debut for the Black Stars during Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Chad in March and quickly established himself as the country’s preferred goalkeeper.

His calmness, leadership and shot-stopping ability have earned praise from fans and technical handlers alike, especially at a time Ghana has been searching for stability in the goalkeeping department following years of inconsistency.

Hearts Of Oak Form Earns National Recognition

At club level, Asare has enjoyed arguably the finest season of his career with Hearts of Oak.

The veteran goalkeeper has kept 15 clean sheets this season, playing a crucial role in the club’s domestic campaign and re-establishing himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Ghana Premier League.

His performances have now earned him another invitation to the Black Stars squad ahead of Ghana’s upcoming international friendly against Mexico national football team next week.

He is also widely expected to be named in Ghana’s final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Story Of Perseverance

Benjamin Asare’s story has resonated strongly with many Ghanaian football fans because it reflects the struggles faced by countless young athletes across the country who pursue football dreams while battling economic hardship.
