Dutch-born Ghanaian forward Tyrone Owusu scores as Telstar fall to Feyenoord in seven-goal thriller
Dutch-born Ghanaian forward Tyrone Owusu scored a fine long-range goal for SC Telstar, but his side were left empty-handed after a thrilling 4-3 defeat by Feyenoord Rotterdam in the Dutch Eredivisie on Saturday.
The seven-goal encounter at the BUKO Stadion saw Telstar fight back from two goals down and continue to push until the final stages, only for Feyenoord to hold on for all three points.
Feyenoord made the perfect start, taking the lead inside the opening minute through Mali international winger Gaoussou Diarra.
The visitors extended their advantage in the 21st minute when Spanish forward Nacho found the net, leaving Telstar with an uphill task early in the match.
Owusu, however, gave the home side a lifeline with an impressive finish from outside the penalty area. Set up by Noach Shenkman, the forward struck past Feyenoord goalkeeper Tjark Ernst to reduce the deficit and lift the mood among the home supporters.
The response was short-lived as Netherlands midfielder Sem Steijn restored Feyenoord’s two-goal cushion in the 32nd minute.
Telstar refused to fold, though, and Patrick Brouwer scored before half-time to make it 3-2 and keep the hosts firmly in contention.
Steijn struck again shortly after the restart, converting a penalty to put Feyenoord 4-2 ahead and complete his brace.
But Telstar continued to search for a way back into the contest. Shenkman pulled another goal back in the 69th minute, finishing after being set up by defender Sem Valk to set up a tense finish.
Despite their late pressure, Telstar could not find the equaliser, with Feyenoord seeing out the game to claim victory in an entertaining contest.
For Owusu, the goal was another positive contribution to his first-team campaign. The forward has now scored three goals in nine Eredivisie appearances this season.
He has also scored once in four Dutch Cup appearances, taking his total to four goals across the two competitions.
Although Telstar were unable to turn their spirited performance into points, Owusu’s latest strike offered another reminder of his attacking threat as he continues to contribute to the club’s campaign.
