Afriyie Barnieh scores brace as FC Aarau knocks FC Zurich out of Swiss Cup
Ghana forward Daniel Afriyie Barnieh scored twice in the second half as FC Aarau defeated FC Zurich 2-0 to book their place in the last 16 of the Swiss Cup.
The 25-year-old delivered a decisive performance on Sunday afternoon, breaking the deadlock in the 65th minute before adding a second goal 15 minutes later to seal Aarau’s progression.
After a goalless first half, Barnieh provided the breakthrough in a closely contested encounter, giving the home side the advantage they had been seeking.
The former Hearts of Oak forward then struck again in the 80th minute, completing his brace and leaving Zurich with no way back into the tie.
His two goals proved the difference between the sides, sending Aarau into the Round of 16 and ending Zurich’s hopes of progressing further in the competition.
The performance also underlined Barnieh’s growing influence in front of goal. The Ghanaian attacker has now recorded three goals and two assists this season, adding to his contribution as he continues to establish himself in Swiss football.
Barnieh rose to prominence in Ghana with Hearts of Oak before taking his career to Europe, where he is looking to build on the promise he showed during his time in the domestic game.
His latest display will be an encouraging sign for both player and club as Aarau turn their attention to the next stage of the Swiss Cup.
For Barnieh, the brace against Zurich offers another opportunity to make his mark abroad and strengthen his claim for a regular role in the team as the season progresses.
