The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, has been remanded into the custody of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) after appearing before an Accra Circuit Court over allegations of publishing false news and making offensive comments against a sitting judge.

The outspoken NPP communicator was remanded on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, after prosecutors accused him of using social media to launch attacks on a Circuit Court judge handling politically sensitive cases.

The court declined an application for bail filed by his lawyers and ordered him to remain in custody until his next appearance on May 27, 2026.

According to the prosecution, Abronye DC published a video online in which he allegedly accused the judge of bias, incompetence, and political manipulation.

Prosecutors told the court that the NPP regional chairman claimed the judge was constantly assigned political cases and that the judge’s rulings were “wrong and full of grammatical errors.”

The state further alleged that Abronye made comments intended to undermine public confidence in the judiciary and provoke public anger against the judge and the courts. One of the statements cited in court allegedly read: “You are not a judge but rather a politician who has covered your hair with a sack claiming you are a judge.”

The prosecution argued that the comments amounted to an attempt to incite the public against the judiciary and could potentially disturb public peace.

Abronye DC has consequently been charged with one count of publication of false news and another count of offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace.

The case is believed to be connected to ongoing proceedings involving controversial remarks allegedly made by a pastor against the Vice President — a matter currently before the courts.

Prosecutors said Abronye intensified his attacks on the judge after developments in that trial, using social media platforms to question the integrity and competence of the court.

The development marks another major controversy involving the fiery NPP Bono Regional Chairman, who has over the years built a reputation as one of the governing party’s most outspoken and combative political figures.

Known for his provocative media appearances and frequent attacks on political opponents, Abronye has repeatedly found himself at the center of legal and political disputes.

In 2022, he was arrested and questioned by national security operatives over allegations he made against then-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo concerning corruption and alleged financial misconduct.

He was later granted bail after public backlash from sections of the NPP and civil society groups who argued that his arrest raised concerns about free speech and political intimidation.

Abronye has also been involved in fierce internal NPP political battles, particularly during debates surrounding the party’s future leadership after the 2024 elections.

He has consistently declared support for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and has openly clashed with supporters of former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong.

His latest legal troubles have once again triggered debate over the limits of political commentary, freedom of expression, and respect for the judiciary in the democratic system.
