The Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, has reiterated the Authority’s firm commitment to driving the transition toward cleaner energy sources through the expanded use of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).

He made this call during the launch of the 2025 NPA Consumer Week Celebration held at Kofi Nimo Park in Ashaiman, under the theme “LPG: A Sustainable Energy for a Better Tomorrow.” The event, attended by key government officials, industry players, and consumer representatives, highlighted LPG as a crucial element in Ghana’s long-term green energy and environmental protection agenda.

Consumer Safety

Since its creation in 2005, the National Petroleum Authority has worked to ensure transparency, fairness, and safety within the downstream petroleum sector.

The Consumer Week, instituted as an annual event, has become a major platform for the NPA to interact directly with consumers and industry stakeholders.

Over the years, the initiative has evolved from a simple consumer education campaign into a comprehensive advocacy programme promoting safer petroleum use, fair pricing, and better service delivery.

This year’s focus on LPG reflects the Authority’s broader strategy to encourage the adoption of cleaner fuels as part of the government’s commitment to a sustainable energy transition.

CEO’s Vision

In his keynote address, Edudzi Tamakloe emphasized that the NPA is committed to building a downstream sector that is innovative, efficient, affordable, and environmentally responsible.

He said the Authority’s mission aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s agenda to modernize the energy framework through the 24-hour economy initiative, which prioritizes energy reliability and industrial transformation.

“Our duty as a regulator is not only to ensure fair pricing and product quality but also to protect consumers and the environment,” he said. “LPG offers a cleaner and safer alternative that will reduce Ghana’s dependence on wood fuel, curb deforestation, and promote public health.”

Tamakloe reaffirmed that under his leadership, the NPA will continue to champion the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM) — an initiative designed to guarantee that LPG cylinders are safely filled and distributed through certified bottling plants. This model, he explained, will eliminate unsafe refilling practices and improve consumer confidence in the use of LPG across the country.

Clean Energy Future

The NPA Chief Executive underscored the strategic importance of LPG in achieving Ghana’s climate and environmental goals. With the global energy landscape rapidly shifting towards low-carbon alternatives, he noted that Ghana must leverage LPG as a bridge fuel between traditional biomass energy and the adoption of renewable sources such as solar and wind.

“If every Ghanaian household adopts LPG, we would not only protect our forests but also drastically reduce indoor air pollution, which remains a silent killer in many communities,” he said.

Tamakloe further explained that the NPA is working with the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition to expand LPG infrastructure, improve distribution logistics, and ensure equitable access across rural and urban communities.

Call To Action

Addressing consumers, the NPA CEO urged the public to always refill gas cylinders only at NPA-certified filling stations and to be vigilant about safety standards.

He also called on industry operators to maintain professionalism and transparency in their operations.

“Energy is not just about power—it’s about life, health, and national development,” he stressed. “Let us all use it responsibly and contribute to a cleaner and safer Ghana.”

The event drew the participation of Energy Minister Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, who served as the Special Guest of Honour, members of the NPA Governing Board, the Ashaiman Municipal Chief Executive, and representatives from oil marketing and LPG marketing companies.
