Ghana produced a disciplined defensive performance to earn a valuable 0–0 draw against England in their Group L encounter at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Boston, frustrating one of the tournament favourites with a resilient display and inspired goalkeeping from Benjamin Asare.

The Black Stars were forced to withstand prolonged periods of pressure from the English side, who dominated possession and created the better scoring opportunities throughout the match but failed to find a way past Ghana’s well-organised defence.

England came closest to breaking the deadlock late in the game when Bukayo Saka unleashed a powerful low strike from outside the penalty area in the 86th minute. However, goalkeeper Benjamin Asare reacted brilliantly to push the effort away. Moments later, Nico O’Reilly rose highest to meet a cross but saw his header crash against the crossbar, compounding England’s frustrations.

Captain Harry Kane also squandered a clear opportunity earlier in the contest when he fired over the crossbar from close range. England continued to press forward, with Noni Madueke and Elliot Anderson both testing the Ghanaian defence, but neither could convert their chances.

Despite spending much of the match defending, Ghana remained dangerous on the counter-attack. Prince Adu came close with an effort that was blocked, while Antoine Semenyo was denied a promising opportunity after being flagged offside. Jordan Ayew and Abdul Fatawu also played key roles in launching swift transitions whenever the Black Stars won possession.

The match featured several physical battles in midfield as both sides sought control of proceedings. Ghana forward Iñaki Williams was shown a yellow card in the second half for a challenge aimed at halting England’s attacking momentum.

Both coaches turned to their benches in search of fresh energy and tactical adjustments. England introduced Marcus Rashford, Eberechi Eze and Morgan Rogers in an effort to unlock Ghana’s stubborn defence, while the Black Stars responded with changes that included Abdul Fatawu, Prince Adu and Kojo Peprah Oppong.

As England intensified their search for a winner, Ghana’s defence remained compact and disciplined, with Asare emerging as the standout performer. The goalkeeper’s crucial saves and commanding presence ensured the Black Stars preserved a clean sheet against one of the strongest attacking sides in the competition.

The result sees both nations collect a point in Group L. While England will lament their inability to convert numerous chances, Ghana will take confidence from a resolute display that demonstrated defensive organisation, determination and composure on the World Cup stage.

Benjamin Asare’s heroics and the Black Stars’ collective defensive effort could prove significant as Ghana continue their quest to progress from the group stage of the tournament.
