Cyberattack forces Jaguar Land Rover factories to halt production

Jaguar Land Rover has been forced to suspend production at multiple factories in the UK and abroad after a major cyberattack disrupted IT systems. The shutdown has left thousands of workers at home and stalled car output.

Jaguar Land Rover Factories Remain Closed

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has been forced to halt production at several of its key plants following a cyberattack that struck just over a week ago. The disruption has left major facilities in the United Kingdom—Halewood, Solihull, and Wolverhampton—closed until at least Wednesday.

The impact has not been confined to Britain. JLR’s overseas manufacturing sites in Slovakia, China, and India have also been unable to resume operations, underscoring the scale of the disruption facing the company.

IT Systems Shut Down to Contain Cyberattack

The incident began on 31 August, when JLR took the decision to shut down its IT systems in order to protect them from further damage. While the move was deemed necessary, it has triggered widespread production delays.

In normal conditions, JLR manufactures around 1,000 vehicles daily. The suspension of operations for more than a week has already resulted in a significant backlog and loss of output, affecting the company’s ability to meet customer demand.

Staff Ordered to Stay Home

Employees working on production lines have been told to remain at home until further notice. Thousands of workers in the UK and abroad have now faced days of inactivity, as JLR works to restore its systems and ensure safety before resuming manufacturing.

The company has not provided details on the origin of the cyberattack or who may have been responsible. However, cybersecurity analysts warn that large-scale manufacturers remain attractive targets for cybercriminals, given their reliance on integrated IT systems.

Suppliers Also Hit by Shutdown

The shutdown has had a ripple effect across JLR’s supply chain. Many of the company’s suppliers rely heavily on its steady production cycle, and the sudden halt has caused uncertainty and financial strain for partner businesses.

Automotive industry experts note that disruptions of this scale highlight the vulnerability of modern manufacturing networks to cyberattacks. As factories become increasingly digitalised, the risks to continuity grow, with even temporary interruptions leading to major financial losses.

 Cyberattack Exposes Industry Risks

The cyberattack that has paralysed Jaguar Land Rover’s factories serves as a stark reminder of the threats facing global manufacturing. With production halted across the UK, Europe, and Asia, and thousands of staff sidelined, the incident underlines the urgent need for stronger cybersecurity measures in the automotive sector.

As JLR races to restore operations, the industry will be watching closely—aware that any major manufacturer could face similar challenges in an era where digital infrastructure is as critical as the assembly line itself.
